I believe that writing is an art. It is a way to express
yourself, tell a story, or argue your point of view of a certain subject or
idea. Writing is also a way to convince someone to share your same beliefs. Rhetoric,
which is the art of writing effectively, plays a huge role in writing. It is
used to argue or persuade your reader effectively.
When writing you must be aware of the message you want to
get across or the argument you may want to make. You must also know who your
audience may be in order to effectively make a point or tell a story. Make your
writing easy for your audience to relate to and understand. It is more than
staying away from grammatical errors and using a bunch of “big” words. Most
importantly you have to be educated or experienced about the subject you are
writing about. That is the best way to stay true to yourself and have a
personal voice to your essay. However, I also believe that people should
consider staying away from using long and obnoxious sentences in your writing if
possible. Sometimes getting straight to the point is not too bad of an idea.
You do not want to lose your readers attention.
I do not believe that there is good writing and bad writing
because every piece of writing has some type of potential to be considered
great; it kind of falls into the statement that one man’s trash is another man’s
treasure. No one can be extremely perfect when they are writing so there is bound
to be some type of mistake. For example, the grammar in one person’s paper may
be extremely horrible but their overall argument could be strong.
As a writer I do tend to write differently depending on the
situation. For instance, if I am writing on twitter I sometimes include hash
tags in my sentences or if I am texting one of my friends I may use acronyms
such as LOL (laugh out loud) and IDC (I do not care). However, if I am writing
a paper for my class I make sure I do not use the same acronyms and hash tags
that I would use if I was on twitter or texting my friends. This also plays a
part in knowing your audience because I would not text my boss the same way I would
text my friends.
